There has and continues to be a huge drive within the built environment industry to deliver buildings that are not only cost effective but also constructed within current sustainability 'shackles'. Additionally, 'Corporate Green Kudos' is becoming more prevalent, with specific environmental management policies often dictating individual guidelines.
BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method)BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. BREEAM is a tool used to establish holistic sustainable design and provides an industry recognised method of rating a buildings environmental performance. The building is assessed under a variety of categories, with a score applied to the project to classify the development as Good, Very Good, Excellent or Outstanding. Many clients now require minimum BREEAM classifications for their estates, including National Heritage and Welsh Assembly Government.
NG Bailey directly employ licensed BREEAM assessors covering Offices, Education, Prisons, Courts, International, Bespoke and Code for Sustainable Homes schemes, and can undertake Pre-Assessments or Full Assessments. Our in-house expertise can also provide pre-planning consultancy services for proposed developments.
Accredited Professional (BREEAM AP) AssessorsFurthermore, we employ ‘Accredited Professional’ (BREEAM AP) Assessors, who provide the design team with expert advice on built environment sustainability, environmental design and environmental assessment. In recognition of the significant contribution a BREEAM AP can make to the design process, up to two BREEAM credits are available if a BREEAM AP is engaged from an appropriate point in a project.
Our assessors are qualified and experienced building services engineers with an in depth practical knowledge of M&E systems and how they interact with the BREEAM credit requirements, which we believe sets us apart from our competitors. In addition, and supplementing our technical capabilities, Bailey Building Services directly employ Building Physics Engineers, who, using the latest in Dynamic Simulation Software undertake thermal modelling exercises which can be used to assist in the BREEAM process, for example undertaking ‘Daylighting‘ studies (Hea1) and ‘Thermal Comfort’ studies (Hea10).
Approved Document Part L: Conservation of Fuel and Power (2010) will come into effect in October 2010 and will influence both new build and refurbishment projects. This will significantly drive down targeted CO2 emissions, with anticipated values being in the region of 25% below 2006 levels, and will require detailed analysis on how to achieve this. It is more likely that low energy or renewable options will become a necessity in helping to achieve these obligations. Energy Performance Certificates (EPC's) are a legislative requirement for any building being constructed, marketed for sale, or marketed for rent and the client has an obligation to provide a certificate to prove it's energy performance.
NG Bailey directly employ Low Carbon Consultants & LCEA Registered EPC / DEC Assessors and can offer a comprehensive range of services including Low Energy Consultancy, Part L Consultancy, Part L Compliance calculations and EPC / DEC provision.
All LCC / LCEA staff are fully accredited for their specific roles and are experienced building services engineers with a collective wealth of HVAC and low energy systems design and construction expertise.
The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC EES) encourages businesses to reduce their energy use by requiring large public and private sector organisations to improve their energy efficiency. The scheme in essence provides monetary incentive for companies to monitor and reduce their ongoing energy costs, and was officially launched on 1 April 2010, Organisations required for involvement have September to register. This, in reality will require many organisations to undertake retrospective energy auditing and will require retrofitting of energy monitoring facilities by accredited installers and by use of accredited software.
Last month's announcement by Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, set out the levels for the feed-in-tariff (FIT) and plans to incentivise low carbon heat. The FIT allows homeowners and large organisations alike to claim cash back for electricity they generate using technologies such as solar panels, small wind turbines and micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants.
NG Bailey provides a range of energy services including Energy Auditing, aM&T (Automated Marketing and Targeting), Performance Management, Energy Management, Regulatory / Legislative / Grant / Feed-In-Tariff Consultancy and Post Commissioning / Post Occupancy Evaluation. All directly employed staff are experienced building services engineers who, in our opinion are most suitably placed to undertake these services, delivering the most feasible and cost effective solutions wherever possible.
Summarised below are an overview of services offered:
We believe we offer market competitive rates and our intricate knowledge of the building services industry coupled with comprehensive knowledge of construction, ensures that NG Bailey are well positioned to offer these consultancy packages, and can provide significant value to both the client and development.
