Eureka! launches two new exhibitions – thanks to NG Bailey

Eureka! The Museum for Children yesterday (27th June 2008) celebrated the launch of two new spaces in the Living & Working Together Gallery, along with representatives from NG Bailey – who made the project possible.

The two new ‘Bedroom’ and ‘Attic’ spaces, which were designed by a team of experts from Ilkley based building services company, NG Bailey as part of a management leadership course, have been incorporated into the museum to encourage children to look at everyday spaces in a different light.

John Blackburn, team leader for the project at NG Bailey, comments: “It has been a pleasure working with Eureka!. We wanted to deliver two spaces that would inspire visiting children and their families for years to come and I believe that’s exactly what we’ve done!”

Children’s bedrooms are places where they sleep, read, play and dream – so the ‘Bedroom’ space looks very much like a typical child’s bedroom, but it’s not, it’s where stories come alive.

The bed is influenced by the story of ‘The Princess and the Pea’, by Hans Christian Andersen, whilst the wardrobe follows the theme of ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis. Children can step into the magic wardrobe, where inside they’ll be mesmerised by what they find.

Children can explore their own dreams in the new gallery; good dreams are captured in the dream catcher whilst bad dreams are given to Baku – a far eastern character who devours bad dreams so they don’t come back.

The ‘Attic’ space has been given a junk store feel, scattered with toys and memorabilia from different generations, to prompt memories from visiting parents and grandparents, allowing families to share their memories and stories.

Tudor Gwynn, projects director, said: ‘We’re always looking for ways in which to enhance the museum and it’s through the creation of spaces like the ‘Bedroom’ and ‘Attic’ that we are able to keep an interest in Eureka! as a popular learning based attraction.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank NG Bailey. The team worked really hard on the project and the designs and indeed the donation they contributed, in order to bring their ideas to life, are very much appreciated by all of us here at the museum.”

The opening event was attended by representatives from Eureka! and NG Bailey.
